My first “life after school” project. It turns out projects in this category are possible, they just take much longer. The carcass is joined with hand-cut dovetails and the lid is a frame and panel construction. It slides to reveal a smaller dovetailed box that rests upon interior rails. The walnut was millyard refuse from a much larger tree which grew local to the box’s making in Colorado. The project took 7 months, although much of that time was spent learning to tune bandsaws for resawing, rotating cutterheads, and generally getting to know a new shop. There are many “fingerprints” and signs of its handmade nature, and I’m ultimately pleased with them and the piece as a whole.
Walnut. Finished in shellac.
